XD<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Anyway, it took about an hour and a half to get to the Great Wall, so we stopped at an authentic enamel factory specializing in a type called Cloisonne. \u00a0The way all the wonderous things are made is a long, rather complex prcoess involving making shapes out of copper wire, sticking them on a vase or whatnot, filling those shapes with the different colors necessary through the Cloisonne powder, and firing it\u2026a lot. \u00a08 layers of enamel! \u00a0Which means firing the thing 8 times! \u00a0Lu Xia said it could take 2 to 3 months to complete a single small vase. \u00a0We stayed at the shop there for about an hour before it was back on the bus to the Great Wall of China!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chisnell.com\/travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2017\/08\/great-wall-ericka-olivia.jpg?w=1080&#038;ssl=1\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The Great Wall is 4000+ miles long and would take one and a half years to walk from end to end. \u00a0We walked for only an hour or so, but even that was challenging; lots of very steep slopes and what seemed to be thousands of stairs of varying sizes and heights\u2026&gt;&lt; \u00a0Even though, it was satisfying. \u00a0I loved every moment of it, even as my legs were shaking on the way back down and I felt like I would die; I fulfilled a lifelong dream of mine, and I\u2019m only sixteen. \u00a0It almost seems to have a dreamlike quality to it. \u00a0The only thing I regret was that it was foggy and visibility was really limited so we couldn\u2019t see a lot of the wall. \u00a0But it was still amazing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0After lunch at the Friendship Shop, we shopped a bit. \u00a0There were so many beautifully cut pieces of jade that were HUGE and cost over $50,000! \u00a0Chisnell SAYS he bought two\u2026but don\u2019t believe him\u2026he\u2019s a big meanie\u2026as you\u2019ll soon find out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0After being completely awed by the things Chisnell SAYS he bought\u2026we headed for the hutong areas; community plazas really. \u00a0We took a rickshaw through the area\u2026 \u00a0THAT was different, even a bit frightening. \u00a0There were so many times I thought we were going to crash\u2026&gt;&lt;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Halfway though our rickshaw run, we stopped to visit a local family who lived in the hutong. \u00a0Apparently, if your family owned the hutong first there was a way you could get it back from the government and continue living there. \u00a0They\u2019re really worth a lot, even if it\u2019s just a small space; 30,000 RMB per square meter! \u00a0After that, we finished with our rickshaw and came back to wait for Mrs. Ding, Amilly\u2019s mother, who also treated us to dinner at a local restaurant on a street called Ghost Street. \u00a0\u2026Mr. Chisnell was very mean to me\u2026 \u00a0He wouldn\u2019t teach me the secret to the Tommy riddle! \u00a0How awful is that?! \u00a0I figured it out though\u2026it\u2019s all about the hands\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0And now we\u2019re back at the hotel, packing for our flight tomorrow. \u00a0We visit the Peking University tomorrow and then we fly to Xi\u2019an. \u00a0Well \u2018night everyone!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olivia!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Sunday, June 29, 2008 8:35pm Beijing \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Wow, what a day\u2026 \u00a0It started early; we left at 8:00, though Mr. Chisnell and the rest of our chaperones were late, \u201cOne dollar,\u201d as Lu Xia said.
