{"id":1836,"date":"2014-07-13T16:39:01","date_gmt":"2014-07-13T16:39:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chisnell.com\/chizblog\/?p=1836"},"modified":"2017-12-27T14:33:49","modified_gmt":"2017-12-27T14:33:49","slug":"student-blogs-as-published-work-i-accountability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chisnell.com\/chizblog\/student-blogs-as-published-work-i-accountability\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Blogs as Published Work I &#8211; Accountability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">One of several posts on my old blog, From the Trenches, about the craft of teaching.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>I: Accountability<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know, another teacher writing about student blogs?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s true that edtech folks have been praising the power of blogs for students for several years, \u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/teacher-network\/2012\/jul\/17\/students-should-be-blogging\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Drennan\u2019s excellent work <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and \u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gettingsmart.com\/2012\/10\/10-reasons-why-i-want-my-students-blog\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Susan Davis\u2019s justifications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> not least among them. Many colleges now require their students to keep blogs of their<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/college.harvard.edu\/admissions\/hear-our-students\/student-blogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coursework or experiences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/srcrawford-idt.blogspot.com\/2006_07_01_archive.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have so for years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0It\u2019s easy enough to find tools for creating them, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kidblog.org\/home\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KidBlog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edublogs.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EduBlogs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/digitallyspeaking.pbworks.com\/f\/Handout_TeacherChecklistBloggingProjects.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">planning for them<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or even assessing them:<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/timhorgan.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/02\/blogging-rubric.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tim Horgan\u2019s rubric<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is excellent and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chronicle.com\/blogs\/profhacker\/a-rubric-for-evaluating-student-blogs\/27196\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark Sample\u2019s simple approach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is effective. More, there are plenty of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gettingsmart.com\/2014\/02\/calling-students-announcing-smartstudent-blog-contest\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.collegescholarships.org\/our-scholarships\/blogging.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scholarships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> available for students who blog well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So why write more? \u00a0A few reasons: \u00a0I want to offer my reflection on student writing and accountability; I want to emphasize the fifth stage of the writing process and its implications; I wish to explore the neglected topic of blog promotion; and I want to relate some of my experiences with writing transformations through blog writing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In brief, though, I see no reason to ever abandon the process of student blogs (though I will explore vlogging in the future!).<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Accountability<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chisnell.com\/chizblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/08\/dangexp.jpg?w=1080&#038;ssl=1\" \/>As blogs are publicly published works by students, the stakes for everyone involved in the writing process (instructor included) go up. \u00a0Gone are the days when a paper was quietly turned in at a desk and just as quietly returned privately several periods later. \u00a0The teacher and student shared a powerful or shameful or forgettable experience of writing and no one ever knew more; and this happened throughout the year with hundreds of students. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, however, the student knows that her writing will be read by people more important to her than a mere teacher: family and friends and, worse, strangers will see her words and ideas and even have the chance to comment or rate the work! \u00a0As a consequence, the writing itself becomes more focused and thoughtful. \u00a0Ever have those papers where you think, \u201cGosh, if he had just spent one more round of revision and proofreading, this could be solid work?\u201d 90% of them? \u00a0Me, too. \u00a0While that will never go away entirely, the student blogs I read seldom are fraught with simple errors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><b>A Process Note:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0I should mention here that my student blogs are always the final stage of the writing process. Students have already taken their work through 2-3 drafts through online peer review and classroom workshops. Once the students have scored their peer\u2019s work as 80% or better, we call the paper \u201cPublishable\u201d and therefore ready to be posted. If it scores lower, they continue to revise until it reaches that stage.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As important, the student blog is a measure of accountability for the instructor, as well. \u00a0What is the quality of work being produced in our classrooms? \u00a0The blog demands that we are seen by other students, by our colleagues, by our administrators, by the parents, and even by a broader sometimes-critical public as credible producers of literacy. (Equally, parents can see clearly when\/what their child is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> producing!) This level of transparency was never before available (or even desirable) in earlier generations of my teaching career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chisnell.com\/chizblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/08\/bloggingaffair.jpg?w=1080&#038;ssl=1\" \/>This implies too, then, that teachers have demonstrable evidence for administrative evaluations of their work as producers of authentic learning. \u00a0In my own case, I am measuring student growth across a year of blog posts. (Do Selma\u2019s March posts show marked improvement over those from October? I have all of them before me to see.) \u00a0Am I seeing a collective class-wide improvement in rubric scores across time? \u00a0Do I have evidence of student composition literacy? \u00a0Do I have evidence of students employing technology?
